  • Q What is Sheet Molding Compound (SMC)?

    A Sheet Molding Compound is a ready-to-mold, glass-fiber-reinforced thermoset composite supplied in sheet form and processed mainly by heated compression molding.
  • Q Is Sheet Moulding Compound the same as Sheet Molding Compound?

    A Yes. “Sheet Molding Compound” is the American English spelling, while “Sheet Moulding Compound” is the British / European spelling. Both are commonly abbreviated as SMC.
  • Q How do I choose an SMC grade?

    A Start with the finished component, application, required performance and molding conditions. JLON can compare these requirements with the available application-specific SMC reference formulations.
  • Q Can SMC achieve UL94 V-0?

    A Selected reference grades are specified as UL94 V-0 in the supplied TDS information. The applicable test thickness should be confirmed from the underlying test report before publication or project approval.
  • Q Which SMC grade is suitable for electrical insulation?

    A JLONSMC5004 is the current electrical reference grade. Its supplied data includes electrical strength of ≥12 kV/mm, arc resistance of ≥180 seconds and tracking resistance index of ≥600 V.
  • Q Which SMC grade has the highest mechanical strength?

    A JLONSMC1001 has the highest listed tensile strength at 160 MPa and flexural strength at 320 MPa among the supplied reference grades. JLONSMC6006W has the highest listed impact strength at 100 kJ/m².
  • Q Is there a low-density SMC for lightweight applications?

    A Yes. JLONSMC9009 has a listed density of 1.45 g/cm³ and is positioned for lightweight applications.
  • Q Which SMC is suitable for Class-A vehicle surfaces?

    A JLONSMC6008A4 is positioned for vehicle structural and large parts requiring Class-A surface quality. Its listed shrinkage is 0.05%.
  • Q Can SMC be used for sectional water tanks?

    A Yes. JLONSMC6006SX is designed for sectional water tank panels, and the supplied TDS states that the grade has passed WRAS certification.
  • Q What are the typical SMC compression-molding conditions?

    A The supplied TDS information gives a starting reference of approximately 1 minute per 1 mm of finished-part thickness, an upper mold temperature of 146–150°C, a lower mold temperature of 138–142°C and a press-force reference of approximately 1000 tons/m² of projected area. Final conditions should be adjusted to the actual part and process.
  • Q How can I get a suitable SMC material recommendation?

    A Send your current SMC TDS, target specification, molded-part drawing or application requirements. JLON can review the requirements and recommend an appropriate starting grade or formulation direction.
  • Q What industries use SMC?

    A Automotive, electrical, construction, and industrial sectors.
  • Q Can SMC be customized?

    A Yes, fiber content, resin type, and additives can be adjusted.
  • Q What is the difference between SMC and BMC?

    A SMC is sheet-based and suitable for larger parts, while BMC is bulk form for smaller components.
  • Q How to choose PVC foam core density for marine applications?

    A 60-80kg/m3: ideal for non-structural or light loaded parts like interiors.
    80-100kg/m3: the most common range for hulls and decks.
    130-200kg/m3: for high load areas such as keel line, engine mountings, and fittings.
  • Q Is PVC foam core suitable for UAV structures?

    A Yes. PVC foam is widely used for non-structure or light-loaded components like fairings or internal liners.
     
  • Q Is PVC foam core suitable for boat hull structures?

    A Yes, PVC foam core is ideal for boat hull. It has lightweight and high strength, excellent water resistance, high impact resistance.
  • Q What is the difference between PVC foam core and PET foam?

    A PVC foam core has higher strength, low water absorption while PET foam core has lower strength and cost. PVC foam core is better for boat hull, decks and bulkheads while PET foam core is more suitable for boat interiors and cost sensitive structures. 
  • Q PVC foam core vs PMI foam: which one is better?

    A PVC foam core is better for processing temperature under 120° C  while PMI foam is recommended for higher temperature between 150-220 ° C.
  • Q Foam core vs honeycomb: which is better for marine applications?

    A Stick with foam cores especially PVC foam core if you re not looking for ultra-lightweight. Foam cores have closed-cell, which are water resistance while honeycomb has high risk of water ingress.
