Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR) is one of the high-performance composite materials.
Especially for applications like Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and Bulk Molding Compound (BMC). These materials are known for their strength, flexibility, and ability to take on complex shapes.
UPR is created by the polycondensation of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids (like maleic anhydride) with glycols (like propylene glycol). The final product is a syrupy resin that, when mixed with a curing agent (usually styrene), hardens into a solid thermoset plastic.
SMC is a ready-to-mold composite material made from chopped glass fibers, fillers, and UPR. It comes in sheet form and is semi-solid, making it ideal for high-volume production.
