How to Produce Sheet Moulding Compound?

Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) is a ready-to-mold, glass-fiber-reinforced thermoset composite supplied in sheet form and processed mainly by heated compression molding.
It combines a thermosetting resin system with glass-fiber reinforcement and other formulation components to produce repeatable molded composite parts.
SMC is selected according to the finished application. Electrical insulation, outdoor components, Class-A vehicle parts and lightweight components require different balances of strength, density, shrinkage, flame behavior and surface quality.

Choose the Right SMC for Your Application

Different molded parts require different combinations of mechanical performance, electrical properties, surface quality, density and dimensional stability. Start with your application and identify the most suitable SMC reference grade.

SMC Compression Molding Guide

SMC is mainly processed by heated compression molding. The following values provide a starting process reference based on the supplied TDS information. Actual molding conditions should be adjusted according to the formulation, part geometry, mold and press.

Process: SMC Charge Preparation → Charge Placement → Mold Closing → Compression & Curing → Demolding → Finishing & Inspection

Parameter

Reference

Compression Time

Approximately 1 minute per 1 mm of finished-part thickness

Upper Mold Temperature

146–150°C

Lower Mold Temperature

138–142°C

Press Force Reference

Approximately 1000 tons/m² of projected area

Engineering Note: The 1000 tons/m² value is a factory process reference for press-force estimation, not a universal material property. Final press selection should be checked against actual projected area, geometry and flow requirements.
