New applications of glass fibre and FRP in the military industry
 Feb 06, 2024|View:65

Military industry is not only the field of carbon fibre, but also the market of glass fibre and FRP! From weapons to logistics, from equipment to barracks, there are glass fibre products and FRP everywhere. The traditional application has become a classic, and the innovative application is the new market for compound material enterprises!

Since its inception, glass fiber materials have been serving the national defence and military, take military aircraft as an example, after years of development, now the domestic and foreign military aircraft are large-scale use of glass fiber composite materials, such as the inner and outer ailerons, rudders, radomes, sub-tanks, spoilers, and the cabin roof, luggage, various types of instrument panels, air conditioning compartment of the fuselage, cover panels, shells, etc., these applications effectively reduce the weight of the aircraft, increase the strength, and improve the commercial loads, and so on. These applications effectively reduce the weight of the aircraft, increase the strength, improve the commercial load, and save energy.

High-strength and high-modulus glass fibre material can also be compounded with phenolic resin to make laminates, which are used in military bulletproof clothing, bulletproof armour, all kinds of wheeled light armoured vehicles, and naval vessels, torpedoes, mines, rockets and so on.

China's military defence has been committed to the research and development of glass fibre materials, as early as 1968, the successful development of high-performance engine casing materials required for solid ballistic missiles, named High Strength-1 glass fibre, and later successfully developed High Strength-2, used in the early Dongfeng missile engine casing.

In the 1990s, the defence and military further successfully developed high strength-3 and high strength-4 and other high-performance glass fibre, which has been widely used in the field of defence and aviation.

Now, the main blade of all military helicopters in China almost all use our own research and development of high-strength -4 glass fibre as a composite reinforced substrate, almost all replace the metal blade, the service life is still several times that of the metal blade. In the transport-20 large transport and Boom-6K bomber, the fuselage interior composite materials, as well as ceilings, floors, hatches and other common application of high-strength glass fibre, both to reduce the weight, but also to reduce the noise.
